At Least 40% of the Children Attending School Today Cannot Read and Write Well Enough for Their age.

by Teach for Romania November 18, 2022

At least 40% of the children attending school today cannot read and write well enough for their age. They have difficulties making sense of the information they read, cannot spot logical errors in a text and cannot form and argue personal opinions based on a written text. They are tomorrow’s adults, who will struggle to understand the clauses of a work contract or the instructions of a first aid kit.

What happens when children stop reading? What happens when they stop understanding what they read? All history and culture, all sensibility and the values authors, historians and artists have gifted us become irrelevant clichés and eventually disappear. We lose our history and culture, our bearings. We lose our grip on our moral compass. We forget who we are and what we stand for.

We know that the strongest predictor of educational success is the quality of educators. At Teach for Romania, we recruit, prepare and support bright, motivated, inspirational teachers who are ready to teach in Romania’s public system, starting from the most vulnerable communities.

Teach for Romania is a Romanian NGO and a member of the global Teach for All network, present in more than 60 countries around the world.  Over the last 8 years, we have worked with more than 300 teachers and 20.000 children studying in approximately 270 public schools across Romania. We can do more. Help us reach further.
