The first patients are being treated at the new Hospital at Marie Curie

by Asociația Dăruiește Viața April 16, 2024

The hospital built at "Marie Curie" by the Dăruiește Viață association, with the support of over 350,000 donors and 8,000 companies, has begun operating and has taken over the children previously hospitalized in the oncology, neurosurgery, surgery, and ICU departments in the old hospital building.

The transfer took place over several days, starting on Wednesday, April 10, and continuing until this morning, to provide the children with all the safety and comfort conditions. The first child moved was two-and-a-half-year-old Andreea, followed by three-and-a-half-month-old Darius. Andreea had been hospitalized until a few days ago in the old neurosurgery section of the "Marie Curie" Hospital - a section the size of a two-room apartment. The girl was accompanied by three nurses and had vital signs monitoring. Despite the emotions caused by the change, shortly after arriving in her new room, she was already playing with another patient, Eva, who was transferred after her.

The playroom is on the floor with the Neurosurgery department, where the two girls are hospitalized. It's a floor with 13 rooms, a play area, treatment rooms, doctor's offices, and a report room. Andreea's mother told her husband on the phone that, after two days in bed, the little one got up, played, and climbed on slides as if the medical problem affecting her walking didn't exist.

The oncology department has now moved to an entire floor, each room having its own bathroom, with a maximum of two patients per room. Ten children, aged between 1 and 16, were transferred from the old section. George has been hospitalized in oncology since January with lymphoblastic leukemia. Since then, he and his grandmother have spent almost all their time in the hospital. "What we really liked is that we have a shower and a TV. The fact that the toilet is no longer shared is incredible," his grandmother told us, while George said without blinking that his favorite is the playroom.

Dăruiește Viață will continue the project with a second building to create a true medical campus, with the same treatment conditions for all children, regardless of their condition, as well as research spaces, training, accommodation for parents, etc. Additionally, Dăruiește Viață will ensure the maintenance of the new building and provide support for staff training and entertainment activities in the Hospital.

The departments that have moved to the new Hospital, in a modern infrastructure with state-of-the-art equipment, are oncology, hemato-oncology, neurosurgery, surgery, ICU, operating block, and imaging. Additionally, Dăruiește Viață, in partnership with the Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children "Marie S. Curie," has proposed to the Ministry of Health a pilot project to operationalize the radiotherapy department, the first department of its kind in a public children's hospital.

In addition to the infrastructure created, Dăruiește Viață supports the "Marie Curie" Hospital in improving the way medical care is provided, establishing international partnerships for experience exchanges and training with Prinses Máxima Centrum, Netherlands (the largest pediatric oncology clinic in Europe), and St. Jude Children's Hospital, USA (one of the largest pediatric oncology hospitals in the world).
