Why a Trade Mission?

One of the commitments of AmCham Romania is to contribute to raising Romania’s profile as an investment destination, both trough domestic and foreign investments and economic exchanges. Three years ago, we launched sustained efforts to engage with local communities across the country and to promote their economic offers to our business community and to foreign investors. During our 2020 virtual Meet the Mayor series we facilitated a fruitful dialogue between representatives of the Oradea City Hall and our business community, and we now believe it is the right time to take a hands-on approach and facilitate on-site engagement for our members and the local community in Bihor County.

We also believe a trade mission could significantly help our member companies explore business development opportunities and facilitate networking with potential local partners. The program we prepared for this trade mission aims to allow as many local engagements as possible and stimulate business development discussions between our member companies and key local stakeholders.

Why Oradea?

With its latest development boom, Bihor County and the city of Oradea are increasingly becoming a hot spot for investment in Romania, with very recent large foreign investment announcements. Last years have seen expanding investment budgets and portfolios in transport and logistics infrastructure, support for local IT&C entrepreneurship, infrastructure for tourism, culture, and education, in addition to generous agricultural lands and industrial facilities in the Greater Oradea Area.

Recently completed infrastructure investments include international air cargo facilities, with expanding air passenger opportunities planned for the near future. In 2024, Oradea will open its direct highspeed (highway and expressway) road connection to the rest of the European Union as well as local projects that increase mobility in the metropolitan area and the wider Bihor County. Planned rail investments promise to link Oradea and Cluj-Napoca with modern passenger and freight rail services and the recently announced EU pilot rail project to stimulate cross-border passenger rail transport significantly increases mobility between the Greater Oradea Area and the EU.

The local authorities are also committed to investing in a local strategy to grow techpreneurship in the region and have launched the Make IT in Oradea hub for local IT&C startups. The IT&C scene in Oradea is a relative newcomer on the Romanian IT&C scene and still enjoys many of the emerging market opportunities that become less frequent in established IT&C clusters across the country.

The city of Oradea and its surroundings have been nominated in 2022 as one of Europe’s best holiday destinations and the local offer includes unique art nouveau architecture in Romania, international cultural events, access to nature and incredible thermal tourism historic sites. The improved passenger airport facilities and rail investments promise to raise the profile of Oradea with foreign tourists even further.

Bihor County is also firmly committed to investing in other sectors that directly contribute to increasing the quality of life and economic prospects of the local community – agriculture, healthcare, education, public transport – so there are plenty more business development opportunities in the region.
