The Truth Behind the 3.5% Myths: How One Minute Can Change a Child’s Future

by World Vision Romania March 16, 2026

In a modest home in Vaslui County, where the smell of burning wood mixes with the sound of children’s footsteps and a mother’s warm voice, Alina’s family is doing everything they can to build a better future.

Alina is raising three children: George, a 3rd grade student, Elena in the 4th grade, and Cristina, a teenager in the 9th grade. Life is not easy, but education remains their biggest hope.

George loves languages. Romanian and English are his favorite subjects, and he enjoys discovering new words and stories. His sister Elena loves mathematics — numbers, logic, and understanding how things work.

Their mother encourages them every day to stay in school because she knows education is their real chance for a better life. Their father works abroad for months at a time to support the family.

Why a warm meal matters

For George and Elena, the warm meal they receive every day through the “Bread and Tomorrow” program is more than food. It is safety, care and peace of mind.

Just as important are the two hours of homework support and remedial education they receive after school, where teachers patiently explain lessons and help children keep up with school.

Through the Bread and Tomorrow program, we support over 1,100 children from rural communities (grades 0–4) with a daily after-school program that provides a warm meal and learning support.

The myths about redirecting 3.5%

Many people would like to help but hesitate because of common misconceptions.

Myth: Redirecting 3.5% costs me money

It doesn’t. Redirecting 3.5% is not an extra donation.

These are funds from the taxes you have already paid.

Myth: The process is complicated

In reality, redirecting takes about one minute.

You simply complete a short form and choose the organization you want to support.

Myth: Others will do it anyway

Many people assume enough others already redirect their taxes.

But in reality, 2 out of 3 Romanians do not take this step.

Myth: If I don’t redirect it, the money comes back to me

Income tax has already been paid to the state.

If you don’t redirect it, the money simply remains in the state budget.
