The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation launched the Special Fund for the Elderly, an emergency fund aiming to respond the actual needs of the elderly in Romania and to manage the social isolation caused by the coronavirus crisis. This fund supports the elderly in any part of the country, especially those affected by loneliness, physical immobility or poverty.

During the crisis caused by the conornavirus, 3.7 million elderly people in Romania avoid the risk of infection only if they stay home. Isolation equals loneliness and lack of access to essential services for the elderly. Many of them get emotional and material support from their family or people in their social circle. But others are forced out of their homes to get food, medicine and supplies of strict necessity, and some are simply immovable, or suffer from depression in isolation. Especially for senior people facing difficult life situations, it is essential having active social services and community providers to support them urgently.

The Special Fund for the Elderly collects various types of contributions from donors, companies and other funders who want to join in solidarity with the lonely elderly.

Several thousand elderly people facing difficult life situations have already called us for urgent support. We respond promptly to their needs and we are close to them, through a social service network which is now active in communities. There are many ways in which old people can be supported during this period: material help, home care, purchasing food and medicines, shopping at home, emotional support, alleviating fears and loneliness. All these can be covered by the Special Fund for Elderly.

The Margareta of Romania Royal Foundation is one of the few non-governmental organizations that carry out social programs dedicated to the elderly, with the support of volunteers, in an intergenerational approach. Since 1993, the Foundation has been supporting the elderly in Romania through programs aimed at combating isolation and loneliness and helping to increase their quality of life, such as the Special Fund for the Elderly, Our Seniors, the Seniors Club, Never Alone, the Flowers for the Soul Campaign, Elderly Helpline, Generation Centers. Thus, over 180,000 elderly people have received support from the Foundation over time.
