The Bucharest power grid becomes safer and more efficient on the Grozăvești – Filaret section, with the installation of Prysmian’s advanced monitoring solutions for High Voltage underground cable systems, based on proprietary DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing) and DAS (Distributed Advanced Sensing) technologies, combined into a DTAC (Distributed Temperature and Acoustic) integrated monitoring system.
The advanced monitoring technology used between the two substations was supplied for the first time in Romania by Prysmian România to Rețele Electrice România (part of the PPC Group), making them the first beneficiary in the country of such solutions.
This project is part of a broader program of rehabilitation and replacement of High Voltage cables between the Grozăvești and Filaret substations, an essential step to improve security of power supply and reduce power losses in sectors 4 and 5. As part of this initiative, Rețele Electrice România has successfully completed the testing and commissioning of the new underground line Grozăvești–Filaret. The new underground line operates at 110 kV with a capacity of 170 MVA, higher and more efficient than the previous one.
Prysmian’s monitoring solutions provide power grid operators with real-time data on cable systems load and operational stress, which is increasingly important as the electricity demand continues to rise and puts pressure on power grids everywhere.
Among the several advantages offered by the monitoring solutions adopted in Romania are:
· continuous monitoring of temperature and acoustic signals and vibrations in cable systems that act as "live entities” and transmit continuous information about their status and location, so that the operator can monitor them in real time;
· help to prevent faults in the network;
· reduced risk of unplanned power outages that could cause costly damage or affect residents and businesses in the area;
· reduced maintenance costs deriving from planned interventions;
Prysmian monitoring solution are ideal for modern transmission and distribution networks from 20 kV to 525 kV HVDC and 600 kV AC.
“If we were to describe the advanced solution used in this project, it is a complex architecture of hardware, software, and optical fibres to collect acoustic and temperature data. Problems such as cable overload, abnormal vibrations or acoustic signals from mechanical factors - like digging - that could damage a cable system will now be visible live on the operator’s monitors. In conclusion, intelligent monitoring of power cable systems represents a direct investment in people’s comfort and the safety of urban communities. A system package that can self-diagnose and quickly signal problems is the ideal solution for the network of the future,” said Nistor Constantin, CCO of Prysmian România.
