Bucharest, 7th of May 2008: Euromedic brings in Romania the first PET/CT equipment, the highest technology in medical imaging and nuclear medicine, registering a premiere in the Romanian Medicine.
The PET/CT scan combines the benefits of PET (Positron Emission Tomography) and CT (Computed Tomography) scans. The PET scan is used to determine the cellular activity and the viability of tumors, evidencing the metabolic details of diseases. The CT scan offers information regarding size and location of tumors, offering a detailed anatomic image of the body.
The new equipment from Euromedic Fundeni Diagnostic and Treatment Center provides specialist doctors with a medical instrument that allows them to diagnose, in early stages, numerous diseases in oncology (various types of cancer: breast, esophageal, cervical, melanoma, lymphoma, lung, colorectal, head and neck, ovarian, osteosarcoms), neurology (Alzheimer, Parkinson, epilepsy, brain Tumors) and cardiology (in measuring myocardial perfusion and viability) diseases.
“The fact that Euromedic brought this state-of-the-art medical imaging and nuclear medicine equipment to Romania, a premiere for the Romanian Medical market, definitely meets the patients’ high need for such services and contributes to the improvement of the Romanian healthcare system. By bringing the first PET/CT scanner in Romania, Euromedic proves once again that the company’s aim is to provide its patients with the best medical services.”, declared Prof. Dr. Alexandru Irimia – President of the Commission for Medical Oncology, Oncohematology, Radiotherapy, Oncological Surgery and Palliative Care of the Ministry of Public Health.
The PET/CT investigation can detect morphological changes six to twelve months before they can be shown at anatomical level using other modalities, such as MRI or CT.
In oncology PET/CT investigations enable the specialist doctors to offer an early, accurate and detailed diagnosis of cancer, to monitor the results of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, to evaluate the recurrence of the disease and to foresee possible answers of the organism to therapy. In neurology, PET/CT helps identifying the brain areas responsible for epilepsy crises and to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease at a stage when it can be still controlled by medication. PET/CT is used in cardiology in order to determine the gravity of coronary diseases and their impact on the functioning of the heart.
Clinical studies prove that in 40% of the cases, PET/CT investigations generate significant changes in the treatment scheme of the patients.
PET/CT investigations are non-invasive and harmless, the only contra-indications being pregnancy, end stage renal diseases and hyperglycemia higher than 180 mgr/dl.
PET/CT investigations are available at Euromedic Fundeni Diagnostic and Treatment Center, located on No. 258 Fundeni Road, 2nd district, Bucharest. For schedules, patients can contact the Center by phone, at the number 021-316.73.89, from Monday to Friday, from 08:00 to 17:00, or by e-mail, at petct@euromedic.ro.
