AISB was founded by the US Embassy in 1962. All members of the school’s Board of Directors are appointed by the US Ambassador to Romania. The Chairperson of the Board is the DCM of the US Embassy.

AISB is fully accredited for Pre-K through Grade 12 by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and by the Council of International Schools (CIS). AISB is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the Primary Years, Middle Years and IB Diploma Programs.
