The business environment is becoming increasingly complex and puts pressure on companies, teams and managers. The demands on leaders are also increasingly complex. It is no longer enough to be visionaries and innovators, but to inspire confidence and effectively manage diverse teams.

However, before becoming a leader for others, it is essential that they be leaders for themselves. The concept of self-leadership is the foundation on which authentic and effective team leadership is built.

Self-leadership is the ability to direct one's own thoughts, emotions, and behaviors to achieve personal and professional goals. It is a form of self-management that involves self-knowledge, discipline and self-motivation.

Leaders who master the art of self-leadership have a deep understanding of their own values, strengths, and weaknesses, and use this knowledge to guide their actions.

Self-knowledge: the foundation of self-leadership

The first step in the self-leadership process is self-knowledge. Without a clear understanding of oneself, it is difficult to effectively lead others. This process involves continuous reflection and evaluation of one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. According to Harvard Business only 10%-15% of business leaders are truly aware of how they feel and think.

Finding answers to questions like "What are my core values?", "What are my strengths and weaknesses?" and "What really motivates me?" are essential to building a solid foundation of self-leadership.

Self-awareness enables leaders to recognize and manage their own emotions, understand their reactions in different situations, and adjust their behavior to achieve optimal results. A leader who knows himself is better able to manage stress, make informed decisions and communicate effectively.

Discipline: the key to success in self-leadership

Once leaders have achieved a high level of self-awareness, the next step is to develop discipline. Discipline is the ability to control your impulses and stay focused on long-term goals, even in the face of challenges and distractions.

Disciplined leaders are able to set clear priorities, manage their time effectively, and keep their commitments.

To be able to act with persistence and discipline it is essential to set clear and achievable goals, create effective routines and implement mechanisms to monitor progress.

Leaders who pay attention to discipline not only achieve their own goals, but also inspire their teams to do the same.

Self-motivation: the engine of performance

Self-motivation is another crucial element of self-leadership. It's the inner strength that drives you to keep going even when the going gets tough. Motivated leaders are characterized by a deep passion for their work and a constant desire to learn and improve.

To maintain motivation leaders must know their internal motivational drives and then feed them consistently. These can include personal passions, the satisfaction of achieving goals, and recognition of personal progress. It is also helpful to surround yourself with people who support and inspire you, creating a positive and motivating environment.

Self-leadership and team management

Clearly, leaders with good self-awareness and excellent self-discipline and self-motivation skills are better positioned to lead others. A leader who manages himself effectively is a benchmark for his team. He not only sets high performance standards, but inspires and motivates his team by personal example.

An essential aspect of effective leadership is the ability to build trusting relationships with team members. Leaders who know themselves and manage their emotions are better able to understand and respond to the needs and concerns of their team. Thus, it creates a positive work environment where team members feel valued and motivated to contribute to shared success.

To develop your self-leadership it is useful to put these steps into practice:

• Identify what you want to achieve and create a detailed plan to achieve these goals.

• Periodically assess progress and adjust your plans based on current needs and circumstances.

• Take time to reflect on your actions and decisions, identifying what is working and what needs improvement.

• Learn to bounce back quickly from failures and see challenges as learning opportunities.

• Surround yourself with positive and inspiring people who support your goals and motivate you to keep going.

In conclusion

Self-leadership is the foundation of authentic and effective leadership. Self-knowledge, discipline, and excellent self-motivation are the skills that enable leaders to effectively lead themselves and others.

By developing these skills, leaders not only improve their own performance, but also create a positive and lasting impact on their teams and organizations. Thus, they become authentic leaders, able to inspire and motivate their colleagues to transform their potential into value.
