  • Registrations take place starting today and until October 20, 2021, on the event’s website: www.hackathon4health.umfcd.ro;
  • For the fifth year in a row, the prizes are being offered by Johnson & Johnson Romania once again, which will offer pre-seed financing worth 10,000 USD to each of the three teams declared winners for the implementation of the developed solution.

The 5th edition of Hackathon4Health, organized by Johnson & Johnson Romania in partnership with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy "Carol Davila" in Bucharest (UMFCD) through the Center for Innovation and e-Health and with the Association of the Society of Medical Students in Bucharest, takes place between October 22 and 24, 2021. The event will be organized in digital/hybrid format.

An initiative of Johnson & Johnson Romania, organized annually since 2017, Hackathon4Health brings together experts from various branches of healthcare, from healthcare professionals to representatives of academia and business, authorities, medical and hospital service providers, medical students and other specializations, technical experts and representatives of patient associations, who will develop innovative digital solutions during the competition days, around the proposed topics.

In this edition, the proposed topics are:

• Prevention and treatment of patients in the specializations oncology, hematology, immunology and multiple sclerosis;

• Mental health and improving the quality of life;

• Medical devices of the future;

• Management and follow-up of the patient from diagnosis and treatment during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

The innovations developed during the event contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of patients in Romania and the development of the national digital ecosystem in the field of health.

"We are glad that the Hackathon4Health 2021 initiative is already a recognized competition in the medical and digital world in Romania and continues to generate ideas that improve patients' lives, having a significant impact on the Romanian healthcare system. Every year, the selected participants accept our invitation and offer us their ideas, energy and perspectives on the medical field, animated by their passion for technology. The digital solutions developed in the first four editions are an important engine for the digital transformation of healthcare in Romania and Europe. At Johnson & Johnson, we contribute through this project to the identification of ingenious solutions for innovation and development in the health and medical field", said Sévan Kaloustian, Managing Director of Janssen, Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Companies in Romania.

The strategic partners of the project, the United States of America Embassy in Romania and the American Chamber of Commerce in Romania (AmCham Romania) maintain their role for the fifth consecutive year.

"The Hackathon4Health 2021 project is a great achievement for participants and we are glad that we can support them and give them the opportunity to submit their ideas to a feasibility test in this competition. Thus, they have the opportunity to make a real impact in the medical field and gain valuable professional experience. With each edition, we become inspired and rediscover the students and participants, while witnessing the trends of tomorrow's medicine being outlined. During all these years, we fully feel the need to digitize healthcare and we want the ingenuity of students to be the vector of positive change. I would like to thank Johnson & Johnson Romania for this long-term approach to a better future", said the Rector of the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, Prof. Dr. Viorel Jinga.

During the hackathon, participants will work in groups and will benefit from the help and coordination of mentors, experts and healthcare professionals, academics, entrepreneurs, IT & C, members of patients' associations, but also representatives of the authorities who will help the participants develop their ideas and put them into practice.

On the last day of the competition, the projects will be presented to the jury by the teams and only three of them will be declared winners. This year Johnson & Johnson will offer the winning projects pre-seed funding with a cumulative value of USD 30.000. Furthermore, the teams will benefit from support in the implementation of their project for a period of 6 months, under the tutelage of the company and of the “Carol Davila” University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest (UMFCD) through the Innovation and eHealth Center. Innovations from previous editions have already been successfully launched or are in an advanced stage of implementation.
