We are Pro ACT Suport:

Pro ACT Suport is a Romanian non-governmental organization that promotes the rights and genuine social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities, developing a model of community housing and related accredited services, so as to meet their natural needs to be and live decently, in the community. Our clients are people with intellectual disabilities and mental health problems, who have been institutionalized most of their lives, in large residential centers in the public social protection system; General Directions of Social Assistance and Child Protection and other public authorities.

Pro ACT Suport in 10 years of activity:

• 10 social services active in Bucharest, Ilfov and Giurgiu County
• 3 social enterprise projects of total of 17 projects implemented
• 41 employees: 32 care workers and 9 experts in social assistance and 9 experts in social assistance
• National recognition from the Ministry of Labor for best model of social inclusion
• 2 international awards for best models in social and labor market integration
• 15 persons with disabilities live independently, outside the care system
• 100+ persons with disabilities were integrated in the open labor market
• 50+ persons with disabilities integrated in the community
• 100+ persons with disabilities deinstitutionalized

Our charity proposal:  

The CPVI “Casa Mihail” is one of our oldest and largest services of community living that addresses people with mental health issues, who although are adults, because of their mental problems, they act like children. In “Casa Mihail” are welcomed persons who decide to leave the social State system of protection and try a new life of community living. In “Casa Mihail” they experience the normal life and valorization, exceeding the tag “beggars” and becoming citizens, working persons, contributors, neighbors and friends of someone outside the social assistance system. The service offers here not only shelter, but psychological and vocational counseling, active support in learning the daily activities, practicing working in the green house and turkey farm within the service.  

This house has a special history conferred by the complex partnership that was at the basis of the construction itself. Thus, the model of the house is designed by the "Institute for Human Centered Design" of Boston, USA, which promotes the concept of universal design - a house adapted to any situation that may arise at any given time in the health of the members living in that house, Habitat for Humanity Romania built the house with this approach focused on voluntary work and attracting prominent personalities, while Pro ACT Suport provides the necessary services for people with disabilities living in the house.

No matter how much we tried over the years to keep funtional and renew things from the house (beds, sheets, carpets, sofas, chairs, floors and other pieces of furniture were changed ), due to the passing of the years and the specific mental health problems of the persons living here, the furniture and the state of the house started to degrade. Since the opening of the service in 2014, around 30 persons have been going through this service, as a first step of learning how to reach social independence and autonomy. Therefore, most of them evolved and went out in other Pro ACT services (in Bucharest) or chose to get out of the protection system and live independent in the community.

Currently, In “Casa Mihail” are living 9 persons with accentuated and serious mental disabilities and because of the generous space, here are organized different workshops addressing another 25 persons with mental disabilities, who are coming every day to socialize, learn to do sports, art craft, music therapy and cooking. With over 30 people present almost every day in the house, the objects and things around the house are starting to be worn out and nonfunctional. For example, the sanitary objects and some of the doors of the bathrooms need to be changed. Also, we have in mind to build a pavilion in the backyard, for the summertime period, to encourage people to spend as much time as possible outside, in fresh air. 

It would be great if you could come along and join our refurbishing projects (bathrooms or pavilion), so that we could make these people`s lives matter and teach them what humanity really means. They are in much need of it!
