Improving water infrastructure to protect Europe's second largest Delta

by Louis Berger June 19, 2017

Bucharest, June 19, 2017A Louis Berger-led consortium signed a 2-million-euro (2.2-million-USD) European Union (EU) technical assistance and design services contract for the modernization of the water and wastewater infrastructure in Tulcea County in Romania.

Tulcea is home to the Danube Delta, the second largest delta in Europe and one of the largest in the world. Life for its residents is particularly challenging compared to neighboring rural areas as access to essential services, such as water supply and sewerage, is limited.

“Improved and modernized water and wastewater management is needed in Tulcea where water supply and sanitation access gaps are significant,” said Slav Marjanovic, vice president and managing director for Eastern Europe. “We are joining the local commitment for preserving the delta’s wildlife and biodiversity while improving living standards. More importantly, infrastructure modernization will enhance efficiency, making services affordable for its residents.”

The joint venture will provide technical assistance for the county’s water and wastewater infrastructure development strategy update, drafting services for tender dossiers and contracts, and development of eight FIDIC-based tender documents and the related procurement plans. The project team also will prepare the EU financing application, which includes a feasibility study along with necessary design and technical documentation. During construction, the consortium will provide design assistance.

In the last 20 years, Louis Berger has won more than 35 water, wastewater and solid waste projects in Romania. Services include technical assistance, studies, design, project management, operations and maintenance, construction supervision and communications.
