“How do schools handle fake news?” – an initiative addressing managers in Education, by Oameni și Companii and Romanian Public Relations Association

by Oameni si Companii December 13, 2022

EduManager is a professional community that includes managers, leaders and professionals in education and has been developed and managed by Oameni și Companii since 2007. The latest meeting addressing this professional community gathered educational managers and professionals to discuss how schools should handle fake news.

Our special guests – Cătălin Hosu – President, Romanian Public Relations Association (ARRP); Viorica Roșca, Public Affairs & Public Relations Manager, ROCKWOOL Romania and ARRP Secretary; Cristian China-Birta, Managing Partner, Kooperativa 2.0 and ARRP Vice-President; Mihaela Onofrei, General Manager, Apollo AI Technologies, and host Mihai Bogdan Petrișor, PhD Associate Professor, A.I. Cuza University presented relevant advice and tips on how should schools address and manage the fake news phenomenon.

Cătălin Hosu, ARRP President: ”Fake news is nothing new, it is used for manipulation, misinformation, it is a type of propaganda journalism. This type of news is written and published with intent to mislead in order to attack the reputation of an organization or person for financial or political gain. Most of the time, sensational headlines are used, dishonest or fabricated for the purpose of increasing readership, spreading online.”

Viorica Roșca, Public Affairs & Public Relations Manager, ROCKWOOL ROMANIA and ARRP Secretary presented European policies to fight fake news, how we can check the misleading content of a piece of news, but also the priorities in dealing with fake news. "To verify the misleading content of a news, we need to answer a few questions such as: who is the author of the story? What is its purpose? What does it convey? Where, how and when? We need to pay attention to the channel, website or blog we are reading. It is also useful to ask the question of why this news appeared on our Facebook or Twitter feed, how it is written, whether the information conveyed is true and whether the context in which the information is placed is false." Viorica Roșca also detailed the knowledge that primary and secondary school students should have about the information they read on the internet.

Cristian China-Birta, Managing Partner, Kooperativa 2.0 and Vice President of ARRP offered some essential recommendations on how to avoid fake news: one should not click news from an unknown source or should verify it by accessing trusted sources: “People make fake news because they get benefits, benefits meaning that one can use visitors’ clicks to sell some technical stuff. One can become victim to phishing and malware." said Cristian China-Birta.

Mihaela Onofrei, General Manager, Apollo AI Technologies, presented a pilot project that identifies fake news using NLP methods.

ARRP – the Romanian Association for Public Relations – was a Partner for this edition.
