Herbalife Nutrition Expands Commitment to Environmental Sustainability and Economic Empowerment with Plastic Bank Partnership

Herbalife Nutrition Romania has recycled almost 1 tonne of plastic and plastic wrap in the last year in its sales and distribution center in Bucharest.

In commemoration of World Oceans Day, Herbalife Nutrition announced a two-year global responsibility partnership with Plastic Bank, a social enterprise that is empowering Ocean Stewards around the world to stop ocean plastic.

Celebrated every year on 8 June, World Oceans Day is a reminder of the importance of the oceans in influencing the planet and humankind. According to https://unworldoceansday.org , the theme for 2022 dedicated to the day is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean".

"The health of our planet impacts the health of individuals," said Erin Richards-Kunkel, senior director of Strategic Partnerships and CSR, Herbalife Nutrition. "Our partnership with Plastic Bank will help improve the world's oceans while creating a financial opportunity for people to join this effort."

Through this partnership, Herbalife Nutrition aims to prevent over 400,000 pounds of plastic from entering oceans by end of year 2023. Additionally, the organization provides an economic opportunity for Plastic Bank's community members in Indonesia, who exchange plastic waste at local collection branches for life-improving benefits. This effort further expands Herbalife Nutrition's commitment to recycling and eliminating plastic waste, while also contributing to its goal to achieve 50 million positive impacts that nourish people and planet by its 50th anniversary in 2030.

According to the United Nations Environment Program, plastic covers 40 percent of the world's ocean surface which results in approximately $13 billion in economic damage to marine ecosystems.

The new partnership is an addition to other active Herbalife Nutrition recycling programs. In more than a dozen markets around the world, the Company has implemented ongoing, local recycling initiatives at the Company's Sales and Distribution Centers to incentivize recycling of company product packaging and educate customers about recycling and waste reduction. Between April 2021 and April 2022, Herbalife Nutrition Romania recycled at its sales and distribution centre in Bucharest: 810 kg of plastic and 100 kg of plastic wrap.

"For us, sustainability is an essential part of making life better. With almost 1 tonne of plastic and plastic wrap recycled in just one year, Herbalife Nutrition Romania is also doing its bit for a cleaner world. Since 2013, more than 200,000 kg of plastic has been recycled globally from Herbalife Nutrition sales centres, and 50% recycled plastic air pillows are used in the packages," said Romeo Căzănescu, Country Director Herbalife Nutrition Romania, Moldova, Hungary and Bulgaria.

The company is also involved in educational projects for children on sustainability and recycling. On June 3rd, children from the "Ana and Children" Association attended a workshop on sustainability organized by Herbalife Nutrition Romania and together with Gabriela Ralea, DIY, home & living content creator and redesign specialist, gave a new life to Herbalife Nutrition's products packaging.

"We are very grateful to have Herbalife Nutrition with us, who, year after year, help us to develop the environmental spirit of the children in our programs through interactive extracurricular activities. We believe that it is extremely important for young children to learn through experience and by connecting to their everyday reality. This gives us and them confidence that we can really make a difference in our relationship with the environment", said Mihaela Voivozeanu, President of the Association "Ana și Copiii".

In its Global Responsibility Report: Nourishing People and the Planet, launched last year, the Company also discusses its goals to reduce the use of plastic and use more recycled materials like PCR (post-consumer resin), while also decreasing the overall amount of packaging for its nutrition products globally.
