The present healthcare situation is defined by the strong commitment of the international community to find and implement the most effective measures to prevent the spreading of the A / H1N1 influenza virus. Following this topic, we want to inform you on the most recent data concerning the pandemic situation and, at the same time, an efficient and affordable way to prevent infection’s dissemination - Actiprotect® masks.

A) The present pandemic situation was analyzed, during the past week, by the World Health Organization and, on the 13th of July 2009, recommendations were issued to all countries, in order to ensure the most effective prevention and fighting measures against the A / H1N1 viral infection.
The spreading of the pandemic virus is not possible to be stopped at this moment, its’ dissemination is accelerating especially in the southern hemisphere, that’s why it becomes very important to vaccinate the entire population against the A / H1N1 virus. The major obstacle is the limited production capacity for this type of vaccine, which affects the availability for the big quantities needed in a short period of time.

To overcome this situation were defined three major areas of action:
- protect the integrity of the healthcare system and the country’s critical infrastructure, by identifying critical professional groups and their urgent immunization.
- a very efficient information campaign on the optimum behaviour of the population in pandemic situations.
- actions dedicated to reduce the transmission of the pandemic virus within communities.

B) Until the pandemic vaccine is produced and delivered in adequate quantities, process requesting a longer period of time, the fastest, easiest and most efficient method to fight against the A / H1N1 virus is to block its’ transmission within communities.
To prevent the aerial transmission of the virus, there are special protection masks; GlaxoSmithKline Company produces the only virus-inactivating type of mask, available for the market. This effect is obtained by the rapid viral destruction, at contact with the external layer of the mask.

Actiprotect® masks’ characteristics recommend them as the most accessible method to fight against the virus:
- contains four overlapped layers, which act successively to ensure protection.
- the external layer, containing the active substance (Virucoat™ technology) rapidly inactivates, within one minute, the viral particles, at direct contact. The effect is obtained by maintaining the mask’s external layer pH at a low level (under 3,5). At the same time, this characteristic has the advantage of decreasing the risk of further contamination for the personnel who is handling the used masks.
- the mask maintains the active protective properties for a period of 24 hours ( inside this interval the mask can be taken off and worn again by the same person).
- they are easy to use, comfortable to wear and the inner layers ensure also protection against moisture formation (important issue in case of long-term wear / hours).
- the mask is odourless and doesn’t cause neither allergies, nor irritations.

As we are convinced that you want to ensure your specific activities’ continuity even in pandemic conditions, we want to inform you that Actiprotect® masks are already available in Romania, making possible to protect your employees and prevent the spreading of the A / H1N1 virus.
