What companies do and do not do for energy efficiency

Energy efficiency refers to the ways we can get the same benefit (light, heating, movement, etc.) using less energy. Energy efficiency has been talked for a very long time. The reason is simple, saving energy and utilities means saving money too.
Moreover, the criteria for customer focus on products and services with minimal impact on the environment and the growing interest in reporting non-financial results make energy efficiency a subject that deserves much attention.

In the following, based on the experience of the team I am leading, I will highlight the most important actions that companies already do, do not do them (generally) or should do them to achieve energy efficiency.

What companies do for increase energy efficiency, usually encompases the following:

  1.  Adopt copy / paste measures without analyzing their real impact on the specifics of their company
  2.  Implement measures to replace LED lighting without analyzing the damping time of the solution and choose the cheapest LED solution that can lead to inefficiency of the investment, the quality of lighting and high fault rate
  3. Engage an energy auditor / energy manager only punctually under the conditions required by law, without requiring a realistic plan of energy efficiency measures
  4. . Performs only spot-on energy analysis measures without an overview (for example, only thermographic analyzes of parts of the building, partial counting of some consumers, implementation of start / stop measures only for some equipment, etc.)
  5. Adopt costly, automated measures, without having no-cost, low-cost and immediate effect measures
  6.  Implement local measures to reduce consumption without measuring and assessing the impact on the total energy economy of the company (thermostats, filters, pipe insulation, programmable relays, etc.)
  7. In the case of happy where energy efficiency solutions are implemented and measured, they are not communicated to the company and to the customers.

What companies do not usually do (but there are exceptions) comprise the following:
  1. Do not consider energy efficiency a priority without having an overview of the potential to reduce operational costs
  2. Do not count the main equipment in the building, warehouse, factory, and does not adapt consumption to occupancy rate, operating time or production flow
  3. Do not take into account daily monitoring of utility consumption and the analysis of exceedances of consumption averages
  4. Do not take into account the No Cost / Low Cost type and are blocked in obtaining funding sources
  5. Have no energy efficiency plan with measurements prior to implementation, monitoring during implementation, and final results measured
  6. Do not educate / motivate / raise awareness of the company's personnel regarding the adoption of a proactive attitude towards the reduction of the waste of energy
  7. Do not consider purchasing / replacing equipment, energy performance as a selection criterion

What companies should do to achieve energy efficiency include the following:

  1. Designate a person in charge of the company's energy management (may have a pool of functions, for example as technical director or administrative director)
  2. Analyze internally or with the help of a consultant the specific context of the company to find the most appropriate approaches for energy efficiency
  3. Make consumption measurements across the main consumer groups of the company / property and monitor the company's consumption behavior
  4. Develop a plan of measures that includes the technical and economic analysis of the implementation opportunity and depreciation time
  5.  Identify partners willing to finance energy saving payment solutions
  6.  Implement and monitor the effect of medium to long-term measures
  7.  Interfere when consumption or abnormalities occur and correct the causes before recording higher energy losses
  8. Communicate the results generated by the company's energy efficiency plan to its employees and externally to customers as a green company strategy.
