The project for modernizing The Intensive Care Unit for New-born at Constanta County Hospital, which hasn’t been reconditioned since 1968, when it was built, is now at its start, with the beginning of the renovation works. The new unit will have a surface of 800 square meters, will accommodate up to 26 patients and will be endowed with state of the art medical equipment, including a telemedicine solution that will allow doctors to monitor children even when they are outside the hospital and send vital medical information or organize video-conferences with doctors from other hospitals in Romania or abroad. The project is run through a partnership of the Vodafone Romania Foundation with Children’s Heart and Give Wings associations.

The budget of the entire project is estimated at 1.3 million euros. The amount will be ensured through the national fund raising campaign organized by Children’s Heart and Give Wings associations, and the Vodafone Romania Foundation will double the amount of the donations.

“The renovation of the Intensive Care Unit for New-born at Constanta County Hospital is the largest project financed in 2017 by the Vodafone Romania Foundation. It is out number one priority this year and a project born out of a need for change. This unit accommodates yearly 1,000 new-born with medical conditions, from Constanta and other three counties in the South-East of the country: Tulcea, Ialomita and Calarasi. The infant mortality rate in this region is now three times higher than the European average. We are glad to support this project and use the power of technology, through the telemedicine solution to be implemented here, in order to increase these children’s chances to live”, Angela Galeta, Director of the Vodafone Romania Foundation, stated.

The unit will have medical gas equipment, conditioning and individual monitoring, incubators and state of the art medical facilities, specialized pieces o furniture, special areas for parents, for the medical staff, for parents’ psychological counselling, as well as rooms for medical check-ups.

Following the model of the project implemented at Marie Curie Hospital in Bucharest, where, in 2013, a new hospital wing was built from scratch, which is the largest financing granted up to now by the Vodafone Romania Foundation, the new unit in Constanta will be endowed with a telemedicine solution which will allow secured transmission of images and medical parameters in real time and remote checking of the patients’ vital signs. The solution will be the tenth telemedicine project implemented by the foundation in Romania. The first telemedicine project from this series of ten was implemented on SMURD ambulances in 2005 and marked a premiere for our country at the time.
