by Louis Berger October 19, 2016

Louis Berger was honored at the International Road Federation (IRF) Asia Regional Congress & Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on October 18. Louis Berger served as the project manager for the Timisoara-Lugoj motorway in Romania, which was recognized with the 2016 IRF Global Road Achievement Award for Project Management.

“Louis Berger is proud to be recognized by IRF and by our peers for excellence in project management,” said Tom Topolski, president of Louis Berger’s international operations. “Through the completion of the Timisoara-Lugoj motorway project ahead of schedule, Louis Berger was able to positively contribute to the region’s economic growth and provide enhanced mobility for local communities bordering the motorway.”

Working with the Romanian National Company of Motorways and National Roads, Louis Berger provided project management, design and construction supervision, training and advisory services for construction of Romania’s Timisoara -Lugoj motorway. The project was comprised of two sections-Lot 1 and Lot 2. Louis Berger completed the first section eight months ahead of schedule, and the second was completed seven months early, making it the first European Union-funded motorway in Romania to be completed well ahead of schedule. The Timisoara-Lugoj motorway links the Romanian section of the Pan-European Corridor IV, connecting central Europe and Turkey. The objective of the project was to support Romania’s economic development and improve trade opportunities within the larger European Union.

In addition to the economic advantages from improved commercial transportation, the highway led to reduced travel times and fuel savings, better passenger safety and important environmental safeguards. The motorway also increased traffic capacity in the City of Timisoara and between Timisoara and Lugoj, an area encompassing 12 additional villages.

Louis Berger has 25 years of experience in Romania, having completed several hundred contracts for public and private sector clients in the transportation, environment, buildings and facilities, economic and institutional development, energy and mining markets. The Timisoara-Lugoj motorway marks another important milestone in the region.

The International Road Federation’s Global Road Achievement Awards is a unique competition that recognizes innovative road projects emphasizing the road industry’s role in social and economic development.
