Janssen Awarded Prestigious European Inventor Award 2014

Date: 06/20/2014
On the 17th June, The European Patent Office (EPO) presented the European Inventor Award 2014 in Berlin to outstanding inventors, honouring their contribution to social, economic and technological progress.

During this event, the Janssen team was distinguished for their efforts in developing the first new effective tuberculosis (TB) drug in 40 years. Thanks to the research team led by Dr. Koen Andries, the disease can now be treated successfully. The innovative drug quickly cuts off the energy supply in TB bacteria, significantly reducing treatment times and enabling a full recovery.

The winner, Dr. Koen Andries said: “I am happy and proud, to accept this recognition and Award on behalf of all eight inventors, and of all my colleagues at Janssen who brought our medicine to patients dying from tuberculosis. It took a great effort to develop a drug against a neglected disease, and more than 15 years of perseverance, persistence and passion to get there. I see this Award as a tribute to all researchers – and companies – doing the same thing, trying to address the medical needs of patients in the developing world, and I hope it inspires them to continue to do so.”

Janssen’s Dr. Koen Andries was selected for this top honor from a pool of 300 competitors. The European Patent Office (EPO) aims to promote Europe as a center for global innovation; winning the award marks the group as one of the top innovation teams in the world.
