Understand the Trade, Cyber and IPR Threats and Protect Your Business

May 12, 2021

AmCham Romania is inviting you to a special engagement with U.S. Department of Justice law enforcement experts to discuss how intellectual property, sensitive data, and trade secrets have become lucrative targets for theft and espionage, including ever more sophisticon ated cyber threats. Understanding the threat landscape and how to protect proprietary information are essential to maintaining the financial health and competitiveness of any business, on May 12, 2021, between 15:00 – 16:30, online.

The Department of Justice and U.S. Embassy-Bucharest seek to inform the AmCham Romania members about some of the threats they may see in the marketplace, particularly those involving actors from the People’s Republic of China (PRC). These include intellectual property rights violations, hacking, trade secret theft, and economic espionage.

Our special guests will be Thomas S. Dougherty of U.S. Embassy-Zagreb and Monika Wasiewicz, Legal Attache at U.S. Embassy-Bucharest.

Thomas S. Dougherty is a Senior Trial Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section.  In August 2020, he opened our new European International Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (ICHIP) office at U.S. Embassy-Zagreb.  In 2015, he began serving in Southeast Asia as ICHIP’s first ever Attorney Advisor for Cybercrime.  As the ICHIP, he advised and trained Southeast Asian judges, prosecutors, investigators, and digital forensic analysts to counter cybercrime and intellectual property crime.  Dougherty has served as a prosecutor in the U.S. Army’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps; an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Las Vegas prosecuting cybercrime, financial and income tax fraud, and narcotic offenses; and as a Senior Trial Attorney in Washington, D.C. where he prosecuted cybercrime, computer-enabled crime and intellectual property offenses in federal courts across the United States.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Government and Law from Lafayette College, a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a Master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College.

Monika A. Wasiewicz arrived in Bucharest in October 2020 to serve as head of the FBI Office for Romania and Moldova. She joined the FBI in 1999. She also was a Deputy On-Scene Commander in Afghanistan. Prior to her arrival in Romania, Wasiewicz was the Chief of Eastern Europe and Eurasia Operations in FBI HQ overseeing all operational and investigative matters in the region.
