On April 26, 2023, starting with 9:00 am, AmCham Romania and the U.S. Embassy in Romania invite you to join an online discussion with FBI experts on online crime.

For close to 45 minutes, our guest will speak about sextortion and the danger it poses in online contexts and will provide participants with practical tips to help you and your dear ones stay safe and avoid becoming victims of online crime. Their remarks will be followed by an interactive Q&A session with the audience.

With the extensive use of technology in all aspects of life, especially in socializing and connecting with other people, online crime becomes more sofisticated and intrusive, with victims often realizing too late the risks they exposed themselves too. This webinar is part of FBI's ongoing efforts to educate young and adult audiences and prevent online crime. The discussion will be of particular interest to parents in the AmCham Romania community and to students.

Online perpetrators might gain your trust by pretending to be someone else. They lurk in chat rooms and record those who post or live stream explicit images and videos of themselves, or they may hack into your electronic devices using malware to gain access to your files and control your web camera and microphone without you knowing it. 

Sextortion is a serious crime that occurs when someone threatens to distribute your private and sensitive material if you don’t provide them images of sexual nature, sexual favors or money. The perpetrator may also threaten to harm your friends or relatives by using information they obtained from your electronic devices unless you comply with their demands. Sextortion can have devastating effects on young and adult victims from all walks of life.
