Among the many consequences of the global financial crisis of 2007-2008, the need for international regulation of financial products and their market participants led, in 2011, to the issuance of Directive 2011/61 / EU on alternative investment fund managers (AIFM). ), the so-called “AIMFD” or the AIFM Directive) with the primary purpose of investor protection and transparency of the investment fund management process.

With the implementation in Romania in 2015 of the AIFM Directive, it also became obvious the need to expand the legislative framework to regulate the alternative investment funds (AIF).
