- Tourism Task Force meeting
06/03/2008
Timeline:
9:00 am
Description:
The Infrastructure and Tourism group within AmCham met on May 13, 2008, and as a result of the meeting, the following directions of action were set:
1. Have separate meetings for the Tourism group and Infrastructure group, given the specificity of each industry.
2. Put together, by June 10, 2008 a draft document summarizing the issues the tourism sector (tourism and infrastructure) confronts with and the recommendations we make in each respect. After finalizing the document summarizing the tourism related issues, it will form, together with similar documents from the tax, energy, environment, healthcare, IT&C, labour, education, infrastructure, etc. groups within AmCham a comprehensive document to be handed over to the 10 prominent political parties in order to have them informed what the business community - AmCham represents – is currently facing and what the business community expects from the political leaders. The document will be called: AmCham Advocacy Agenda.
3. Take a look, by our next Tourism Task Force meeting, at the Tourism Master Plan for 2007 – 2026 and pick up from there the issues and recommendations of relevance and interest for the AmCham tourism community. The “very concise” Master Plan (470 pages) can be accessed in English at the following link: http://www.amcham.ro/index.html/articles/articleID_124/Romania-National-Tourism.html
and in Romanian at: http://www.mturism.ro/?id=48
4. The work in the Tourism Task Force will focus on 2 – 3 meaningful issues and interventions.
The Tourism related discussion touched on the following topics:
- The missed opportunity that tourism represents for Romania, despite the huge potential the county has;
- The need to get the Government officials aware, supportive and truly involved;
- Core problems: infrastructure, law enforcement, promotion and country brand, labor force shortage and missing skills of employees;
- Problems highlighted by big tour operators: poor infrastructure and poor quality of services;
- Missing coherent and comprehensive approach when it comes to administering tourist destinations;
- The need to create synergies and to synchronize actions while enhancing communication among relevant stakeholders: government officials, authorities, business community, etc.
- The opportunity to advocate for tax incentives in order to stimulate the tourism industry;
- The need to have a Government Body, be it ministry of agency, really in charge with the tourism sector and equipped with the necessary tools (authority, budget, experts, etc.) to be able to make a difference.
Next Tourism Task Force meeting: June 3, 2008, 9:00 am, at AmCham focusing on the issues identified in the Tourism Master Plan (links above) and additional issues to be included in our advocacy agenda.
