AmCham supports the Radio Free Europe, Here. The nation-wide campaign is meant to generate support and ensure financing for a “Radio Free Europe Center of Research and Documentation” to be established in Bucharest. The initiator is the “Romanian Institute for Recent History”, an independent foundation (www.irir.ro), in cooperation with former members of RFE’s Romanian Department. The campaign will start December 1 on TV, radio and print, and will concentrate on “bringing home” a duplicate of the Romanian broadcasting archive stored at the Hoover Institution in Stanford, Cal.
The U.S. financed “Radio Free Europe” has been Romania’s most important media phenomenon of before 1989, and has played a decisive role in the recent history of this country. The premises for abolishing the totalitarian rule and embarking on the road to freedom and democracy in Romania are – to a great extent – the result of RFE’s broadcasts to this country.
Reminding the Romanians of RFE’s outstanding significance and contribution to the freedom and prosperity they have gained, the campaign’s main goal will be to gather the funds needed (at least 300,000 EUR) for the digitizing of the Romanian broadcasting archive. More details about the campaign and how to donate can be found at www.irir.ro/en and, very soon, at www.europalibera.ro.
